SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: FOS Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The force behind the FOS Brothers are Dave and Sam McCrory. Brought up in Belfast during the height of the troubles\, their sensibilities derive from a hard schooling on the streets and strict Northern Irish evangelical church attendance\, reflected in the eclectic mix of original songs with traditional Irish sensibilities flavoured liberally with Floydian\, Genesis\, Horslipian spices. \nDave left Ireland at the age of 19 to study at Oxford Polytechnic and Sam came over four years later to form the band. They met Rom Dobbs and have collaborated with him for more than 25 years. Rom started out in punk bands and developed a fascination with world music when living in Devon near Dartington College where his dad was head of music. \nPete Bingham is best known for his band Waulk Elektrik who became very popular on the Roots music circuit in the 90’s. \nThey are a “right bunch of characters – all weird in their own way but managing to merge into a wall of sound when let loose on stage”. \nThe line up is: \nSam McCrory – Vocals\, Guitar. \nDave McCrory – Acoustic and Electric Guitar\, Mandolin\, Vocals. \nRom Dobbs – Drums\, percussion\, samples and loops. \nPete Bingham – Bass\, Vocals. \nCheck out their CD ‘Clear Again’ and the live videos on their website \nwww.fosbrothers.com \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy. \nIf you require accessible tickets they can be purchased over the phone on 01736798577 or in person at our box office in St Ives Library. \nIf you are in need of assistance please share as much information as possible about your requirements at the time of booking so we can ensure that your needs are catered for when you arrive at the Guildhall. \nTICKETS CAN BE BOOKED HERE

SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:2022 sees The Countrymen appear at The Guildhall on their third concert tour of Cornwall and Devon with “Songs of Hope” – which they feel is an appropriate name for the times we currently live in. \nFive seasoned musicians with tight four-part harmony vocals – and a token Cornishman! \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as an increasing number of their own compositions. \nLast year The Countrymen produced a new song Lights Of Mousehole\, written by their bass player Simon Wrench\, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster\, with all proceeds going to the fund to provide a locally sculpted granite memorial on the cliffs near Lamorna. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood\, there is no mistaking that they love their county with a passion. \nThe band was formed at their local – The Countryman Inn near Launceston – which is where their name originates and where they found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for their emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire. \nNow in their fifth year\, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, The Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth Week\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Little Orchard Festival and Looe Saves The Day. \nThe Countrymen have also been busy in the recording studio\, releasing online EPs Cornish Lads Volumes 1\, 2 and 3 – all available for download and streaming on the usual websites. They also have a CD “Trees on the Hill” featuring most of their Cornish material to date. \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event.

SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: Peggy Seeger
DESCRIPTION:“From the moment she stepped on stage\, Peggy held every person in that packed auditorium spellbound” – Tradition Magazine \nPeggy Seeger is totally unique. Sister of Pete Seeger (the great-grandfather of USA folk revival) and partner of the late Ewan MacColl\, theorist and practitioner of UK folk revival)\, she has carved a special niche for herself in both these countries. Trained in both classical and folk music\, her experience spans 55 years of performing\, travel and songwriting. \nShe’ll sing an unaccompanied traditional ballad\, follow it with a tall tale about a circus high-diver\, then launch into a topical song about drugs\, war\, hormones\, politicians\, unions\, women\, love or ecology. A multi-instrumentalist (piano\, guitar\, 5-string banjo\, autoharp\, English concertina and Appalachian dulcimer)\, she is probably best known for her feminist songs (such as Gonna Be an Engineer) and for The Ballad of Springhill\, which is rapidly becoming regarded as a traditional song. \nShe has been recognised and awarded throughout her career including a Grammy nomination\, she was the first winner of Women in Music Inspirational Artist award from “Music Week” and she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Folk Alliance. \nPlease Note:  when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy. \nIf you require accessible tickets they can be purchased over the phone on01736798577 or in person at our box office in St Ives Library. \nIf you are in need of assistance please share as much information as possible about your requirements at the time of booking so we can ensure that your needs are catered for when you arrive at the Guildhall. \nTICKETS CAN BE BOOKED HERE

SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: Emily Barker with Lukas Drinkwater
DESCRIPTION:Emily Barker is an award-winning singer-songwriter\, best known as the writer and performer of the theme to the BBC’s hugely successful crime drama Wallander starring Kenneth Branagh. \nShe has released music as a solo artist as well as with various bands and collaborations including The Red Clay Halo\, Vena Portae\, Marry Waterson\, Lukas Drinkwater and Applewood Road\, with whom she released a remarkable album of original songs recorded live around a single microphone and dubbed “flawless” by The Sunday Times. \nShe has also written for film\, including composing the soundtrack for Jake Gavin’s lauded debut feature Hector starring Peter Mullan and Keith Allen. \nEmily Barker’s album A Dark Murmuration of Words\, released in September 2020\, hit No 1 on the Official Americana Album chart in the UK and has garnered widespread acclaim. It takes Barker’s clear\, expressive vocals and warm acoustic aesthetic and subtly shifts her sound in the direction of contemporaries such as Laura Marling and Phoebe Bridgers. \nLyrically probing\, by turns both dark and optimistic\, Barker searches for meaning through the deafening clamour of fake news and algorithmically filtered conversation\, delivering a timely exploration of the grand themes of our age through the lens of what it means to return “home.” \nThroughout the ten songs that make up the album\, Barker draws connections between the familial\, the local\, and the global: a mother sings to her unborn child\, asking for its forgiveness on ‘Strange Weather’; ‘When Stars Cannot Be Found’ explores the humbleness and comfort of the night sky when far away from home. Other highlights include the nostalgic ‘Return Me’\, ‘The Woman Who Planted Trees’\, the gloriously defiant ‘Machine’ and the effortless album closer ‘Sonogram’. \nEmily Barker will appear at St Ives with Lukas Drinkwater. \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy.
