SUMMARY:Budapest Café Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Budapest Cafe Orchestra (BCO) was established by British composer and violinist Christian Garrick in 2009. Led by Christian they play a blistering barrage of traditional folk and gypsy-flavoured music from across the Balkans and Russia\, Klezmer laments\, Romanian Doinas\, Hungarian Czardas and their own unique re-imaginings of some of the biggest pieces ever written by the greats. \nThey have won legions of fans through their magical and infectious performances. Evoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros\, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires –  plus a few surprises along the way –  hugely entertaining\, immense skill and profound musicianship. \nThe BCO is a small but impeccably formed orchestra of just four players combined to create aural alchemy so wholesome you would be forgiven for thinking a far bigger ensemble is at work. Two of the country’s most revered international soloists revel at the heart of proceedings. Accordionist exemplar Eddie Hession is a supreme accordion champion of Great Britain. In his illustrious career\, he has accompanied Luciano Pavarotti\, Placido Domingo\, Jose Carreras and Chris Rea.  Christian Garrick is one of the world’s most celebrated jazz violinists. He has played with the likes of Dame Cleo Laine & Sir John Dankworth\, Wynton Marsalis\, Nigel Kennedy\, Bireli Lagrene and Caro Emerald. Another member of the Orchestra is one of Russia’s most enigmatic musical exports. The Sultan is played expertly by Adrian Zolotuhin\, a master of the strummed strings of domra\, balalaika\, guitar and saz.  Veteran bass-man Kelly Cantlon has been in the business of laying down the low notes for many moons. Kelly found fame in the late 60’s as a Vagabond with northern soul sensations Jimmy James and the Vagabonds. \nCHRISTIAN GARRICK – violin \nEDDIE HESSION – accordion \nKELLY CANTLON – double bass \nADRIAN ZOLOTUHIN – guitar\, saz\, balalaika\, domra \n  \n\nAcoustically Electrifying” NME \n\n\n“Brain placebo” Times \n  \n\n\nTICKETS can be purchased HERE \n  \n\nPlease note when booking that this is a seated event. \nIf you require accessible tickets they can be purchased over the phone on  01736798577 or in person at our box office in St Ives Library. \nIf you are in need of assistance please share as much information as possible about your requirements at the time of booking so we can ensure that your needs are catered for when you arrive at the Guildhall. \n

SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: Lindisfarne
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS SOLD OUT \n  \nLEGENDARY 70s folk-rock pioneers LINDISFARNE will headline the opening night of the 2022 St Ives September Festival at The Guildhall. \nThe Geordie icons will bring a classic five-piece line-up of long-time members\, fronted by one of the originals – Rod Clements on vocals\, mandolin\, fiddle and slide guitar. \nWith a repertoire of unforgettable songs like Meet Me On The Corner\, Fog On The Tyne\, Lady Eleanor and Run For Home and a reputation for live performance second to none\, LINDISFARNE’S power to galvanise festival and concert audiences remains undimmed and is guaranteed to get the crowd singing along. \nLINDISFARNE emerged from Tyneside in the 1970s and quickly carved out a unique place for themselves as one of Britain’s most original rock bands. Their pioneering sound\, combining acoustic instruments such as mandolin and fiddle with their electric blues roots\, proved the perfect medium to deliver the catchy\, memorable songs provided by the band’s resident writers Alan Hull and Rod Clements. Their first hit\, the Clements-penned Meet Me On The Corner\, paved the way for their classic Fog On The Tyne to become the UK’s top-selling album of 1972. \nLINDISFARNE’S unforgettable songs\, powerful live performances and unpretentious style led to worldwide success and an enviable reputation as festival favourites and the annual Christmas concerts they presented in their native Newcastle became the stuff of legend. \nThe original band called it a day in 2003 but now LINDISFARNE are back fronted by “original” Rod Clements and Alan Hull’s son-in-law Dave Hull-Denholm (vocals and guitar). The 2022 band line-up is: \nROD CLEMENTS (1969-present) Vocal\, mandolin\, fiddle\, guitars \nDAVE HULL-DENHOLM (1994-present) Vocal\, guitars \nSTEVE DAGGETT (1986-present) Vocal\, keyboards\, guitars. \nIAN THOMSON (1995-present) Bass\, vocal \nPAUL SMITH Drums. \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy. \nTICKETS CAN BE BOOKED HERE

SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: Emily Barker with Lukas Drinkwater
DESCRIPTION:Emily Barker is an award-winning singer-songwriter\, best known as the writer and performer of the theme to the BBC’s hugely successful crime drama Wallander starring Kenneth Branagh. \nShe has released music as a solo artist as well as with various bands and collaborations including The Red Clay Halo\, Vena Portae\, Marry Waterson\, Lukas Drinkwater and Applewood Road\, with whom she released a remarkable album of original songs recorded live around a single microphone and dubbed “flawless” by The Sunday Times. \nShe has also written for film\, including composing the soundtrack for Jake Gavin’s lauded debut feature Hector starring Peter Mullan and Keith Allen. \nEmily Barker’s album A Dark Murmuration of Words\, released in September 2020\, hit No 1 on the Official Americana Album chart in the UK and has garnered widespread acclaim. It takes Barker’s clear\, expressive vocals and warm acoustic aesthetic and subtly shifts her sound in the direction of contemporaries such as Laura Marling and Phoebe Bridgers. \nLyrically probing\, by turns both dark and optimistic\, Barker searches for meaning through the deafening clamour of fake news and algorithmically filtered conversation\, delivering a timely exploration of the grand themes of our age through the lens of what it means to return “home.” \nThroughout the ten songs that make up the album\, Barker draws connections between the familial\, the local\, and the global: a mother sings to her unborn child\, asking for its forgiveness on ‘Strange Weather’; ‘When Stars Cannot Be Found’ explores the humbleness and comfort of the night sky when far away from home. Other highlights include the nostalgic ‘Return Me’\, ‘The Woman Who Planted Trees’\, the gloriously defiant ‘Machine’ and the effortless album closer ‘Sonogram’. \nEmily Barker will appear at St Ives with Lukas Drinkwater. \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy. \nTICKETS CAN BE BOOKED HERE

SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: Brooks Williams & Dan Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Admired by both listeners and fellow musicians alike\, Brooks Williams and Dan Walsh combine talents for an extraordinary collaboration of British and Americana roots music on guitar and banjo. \nEach is a leading light on their respective instruments and they both bring buckets of charisma and talent to the stage. Add to that poignant songs and lively humour and the result is a truly remarkable duet. They will simply knock your socks off! \nIn 2020\, they released a video of the Jimmie Davis and Eva Sargent classic\, Columbus Stockade Blues. The response was instant and positive. With “You should do more of this”\, the predominant reaction. And so they have. \nWith a few gigs under their belt\, including Whitstable Sessions in Kent\, Maverick Festival in Suffolk\, and AVH Concerts in Derbyshire\, Williams and Walsh have officially combined forces. Their repertoire includes their own songs and tunes\, as well as classics from The Blind Boys Of Alabama\, Norman Blake\, Bessie Smith and Nanci Griffith. \nBrooks Williams plays guitar with ‘melodic virtuosity’ effortlessly combining old-time fingerpicking\, country flat picking and bluesy backbeats. \nBBC Folk Awards Best Musician nominee Dan Walsh plays British\, Irish and American folk music featuring a unique and dazzling take on clawhammer style banjo “Absolutely terrific\,” said BBC Radio 2 Folk Show presenter Mark Radcliffe. \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy. \nTICKETS can be booked – HERE

DESCRIPTION:“From the moment she stepped on stage\, Peggy held every person in that packed auditorium spellbound” – Tradition Magazine \nPeggy Seeger is totally unique. DESCRIPTION:Tir ha Tavas makes a welcome return to the September Festival. \nFormed in February 2013\, Tir ha Tavas\, which means “land & language” in the Cornish Language Kernewek\, is Dee Brotherton\, Myrghwyn Melynor and Dave Brotherton\, Ilewydh Porthia\, bards of Gorsedh Kernow\, musicians and singer-songwriters based in St Ives\, West Cornwall. \nDee and Dave are familiar figures on the traditional Cornish and Celtic folk scene with their band Bagas Porthia which often features guest performers but they also wanted to write and perform more of their own material including songs in the Cornish language. SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:2022 sees The Countrymen appear at The Guildhall on their third concert tour of Cornwall and Devon with “Songs of Hope” – which they feel is an appropriate name for the times we currently live in. \nFive seasoned musicians with tight four-part harmony vocals – and a token Cornishman! \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as an increasing number of their own compositions. \nLast year The Countrymen produced a new song Lights Of Mousehole\, written by their bass player Simon Wrench\, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster\, with all proceeds going to the fund to provide a locally sculpted granite memorial on the cliffs near Lamorna. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood\, there is no mistaking that they love their county with a passion. \nThe band was formed at their local – The Countryman Inn near Launceston – which is where their name originates and where they found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for their emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire. \nNow in their fifth year\, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, The Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth Week\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Little Orchard Festival and Looe Saves The Day. \nThe Countrymen have also been busy in the recording studio\, releasing online EPs Cornish Lads Volumes 1\, 2 and 3 – all available for download and streaming on the usual websites. They also have a CD “Trees on the Hill” featuring most of their Cornish material to date. \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy. \nTICKETS CAN BE BOOKED HERE

SUMMARY:2022 September Festival: FOS Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The force behind the FOS Brothers are Dave and Sam McCrory. Brought up in Belfast during the height of the troubles\, their sensibilities derive from a hard schooling on the streets and strict Northern Irish evangelical church attendance\, reflected in the eclectic mix of original songs with traditional Irish sensibilities flavoured liberally with Floydian\, Genesis\, Horslipian spices. \nDave left Ireland at the age of 19 to study at Oxford Polytechnic and Sam came over four years later to form the band. They met Rom Dobbs and have collaborated with him for more than 25 years. Rom started out in punk bands and developed a fascination with world music when living in Devon near Dartington College where his dad was head of music. \nPete Bingham is best known for his band Waulk Elektrik who became very popular on the Roots music circuit in the 90’s. \nThey are a “right bunch of characters – all weird in their own way but managing to merge into a wall of sound when let loose on stage”. \nThe line up is: \nSam McCrory – Vocals\, Guitar. \nDave McCrory – Acoustic and Electric Guitar\, Mandolin\, Vocals. \nRom Dobbs – Drums\, percussion\, samples and loops. \nPete Bingham – Bass\, Vocals. \nCheck out their CD ‘Clear Again’ and the live videos on their website \nwww.fosbrothers.com \nPlease Note: when booking that this is a seated event. \nPlease Note: St Ives September Festival has a no refunds policy. \nTICKETS CAN BE BOOKED HERE

SUMMARY:A Blaze of Feather
DESCRIPTION:Five years & five records on from 2017’s EP1\, A Blaze Of Feather return to celebrate the award winning Cornish language film ‘Hunros Jorna’\, with a string of intimate headline UK performances. \n‘A Blaze Of Feather’ continue to craft cinematic alt-folk reverie at the end of land. Sparked out from the supernatural heart of West Cornwall\, songwriter Mickey Smiths music carries the heavy weather & raw stone influence of his homeland. A renowned artist\, with 2010’s ‘Darkside Of The Lens’ described as one of the most influential surf films of all time; Smith’s elemental sonics first appeared as ‘A Blaze Of Feather’ in 2017\, releasing EP1 & a self titled follow up on Ben Howard’s own ‘Hell Up Records’. He is supported on record by a skilled cast\, thick as thieves after over a decade recording & touring the world together; including Ben Howard\, Nat Wason\, India Bourne\, Richie Thomas\, and Kyle Keegan. \nIn May 2022 A Blaze Of Feather released the soundtrack for ‘Hunros Jorna’\, the multi-award winning Cornish language film written by Smith in collaboration with the creativity of gifted cinematographer Allan Wilson and the mercurial Gwenno Saunders. Smiths songs chronicle personal and social struggle amongst an ethereal Celtic world of wild sea and dreamscapes. \nBook Tickets\n \nOfficial Site \n‘Exquisite’ – The Independent \n‘Beautifully evocative\, perfectly crafted\, all absorbing’ – BBC 6Music – Chris Hawkins \n‘A master of melancholy understatement’ – Evening Standard \n‘Hypnotic fractured folk’ – The Times \n‘Completely extraordinary\, indescribable soundscapes’ – BBC Introducing South West \n  \n\nhttps://stivesguildhall.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/FRI-AD-1-.mp4

SUMMARY:Dee & Dave Brotherton - Influenced by The Beatles
DESCRIPTION:Over the years Dee & Dave Brotherton\, along with half the nation or so it seems to them\, have bopped\, boogied\, bantered and (we hope) beguiled their way through the behemoth that is The Beatles and still find new ways to interpret the amazing songs of John\, Paul\, George and Ringo. Whether they’ve been “With The Beatles”\, on a “Magical Mystery Tour” or taking turns with guest performers who always manage to find yet another little anecdote\, the Fab Four have been an inspiration across the generations\, not only through writing and recording their great songs but writing for other artists too\, such as Peter and Gordon\, Billy J Kramer and Cilla Black. \nDee & Dave will re-visit some of these much loved songs penned for fellow performers alongside a collection of Beatles songs recorded by other artists through the years. They will draw on their years of experience as musicians who have embraced many genres of music\, including classical\, choral\, Brazilian samba and in more recent times\, Cornish & Celtic music. Their love of vocal harmony fits perfectly with these songs penned by The Beatles for other artists who have already made them their own. SUMMARY:The Three Degrees
DESCRIPTION:When you hear the name\, The Three Degrees\, you immediately think of their most famous song\, “When Will I See You Again”\, a major hit record throughout the world\, topping charts in the USA\, UK\, Japan and most European countries. It earned the trio every conceivable accolade not to mention enough Gold records to make Fort Knox envious! \nMore than five decades on\, The Three Degrees have retained their precise vocal qualities and amassed an impressive list of hit records. \nIn 1972\, they aligned their recording fate with Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International label and hit the charts with “Dirty Ol’ Man”. Soon after came “The Sound of Philadelphia”\, which featured the ladies with MFSB. \nThe following year produced their biggest hit ‘When Will I See You Again”. “The whole Philadelphia Sound was the brainchild of Kenny (Gamble) and Leon (Huff)\,” explains Valerie Holiday\, a Three Degree since 1967. “They wrote and produced most of the hits for Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes\, The O’Jays\, Billy Paul and The Jacksons among many others.” \nDuring their three years with Philadelphia International\, the hits kept coming with “Year Of Decision”\, “Take Good Care Of Yourself” and “Toast of Love” \nIt was during this era that Prince Charles – now King Charles – publicly acclaimed The Three Degrees as his favourite group – Charlie’s Angels as they were tagged! “It was a great feeling… a feeling of awe\,” recalls Valerie. \nIn 1978 they teamed up with Giorgio Moroder (of Donna Summer fame) and a new string of hits followed – “Giving Up\, Giving In”\, “My Simple Heart”\, “The Runner” and the lush ballad “Woman In Love”. \nThe Three Degrees\, the longest-running female vocal group in history\, show no signs of slowing down! \nThe Three Degrees are Valerie Holiday\, Freddie Pool and Tabitha King. Their St Ives show will include a support act. \nBook Tickets \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nPlease note: The September Festival has a no refunds policy
